Although gossip is present everywhere, there is truly no place for it in the workplace. These tips below will help you deal with gossip in the workplace and how to stay away from work drama.
1. Do not participate
Ever heard of the saying “misery needs company”? You may have coworkers coming to you with drama and rumors, hoping to get a rise out of you, or to simply pass it on. Do not feel you need to participate to be accepted in the workplace. Not only will it create for distraction but will add to a negative work culture as gossip at work is a recipe for disaster. Avoid dealing with negative coworkers and remain to yourself when you see fit.
2. Report it
Sometimes gossip may go a little too far and violate company policy. This may include discrimination, violation of ethics, and affecting morale. If ignoring it hasn’t worked, you may want to try speaking to your superior. They are in place to assist and promote a positive healthy work culture above all.
3. Surround yourself with positivity
Being around negative energy can easily influence those same behaviors. Spend some time getting to know those at work and deciding who you want to spend time with. As you know, work takes up most of your week, meaning you should build trustworthy relationships with those around you if you’re spending all that time there.
4. Keep it to yourself
Remember that you must be mindful of the things you do decide to share with others. If you share very personal things, others may use this to spread rumors. After all, you do not want to be the basis of their next rumor, so you are better off keeping your personal life private.
5. Stay positive
This type of work culture may be very disappointing. However, keep in mind that these things are temporary and shouldn’t affect the way you feel about your actual job. Counter the gossip with positivity and note that if you remain positive, others will not be coming to you to spread information.
Like anywhere else, bullying, gossip, and rumors may exist in the workplace. What is important is the maturity you exhibit to ignore and not partake in any of it.
